My Health, My Metabolism

A metabolic disorder occurs when abnormal chemical reactions in your body disrupt this process. When this happens, you might have too much of some substances, or too little of other ones that you need to stay healthy.

I have an slightly unconventional metabolic disorder. Most metabolic disorders affect the thyroid. Mine however, affects my adrenal system.
The failing chemical process in my body (since birth) caused the immune problems, demineralising of my bones (I had three breaks/fractures within 9 months) and depletion of adrenal hormones resulting in insomnia, vivid nightmares, daymares, cardiac problems, liver problems and low mood.
My specific problem is with the balance of zinc and copper. I have copper toxicity (my body is literally toxic with copper, it has way way too much of it!) Consequence of it is my adrenal system is turned on full-ball all the time pumping out adrenalin which means i’m always on edge, wired or anxious or excited/nervous feeling all the time. My body craves carbs and sugars to keep going (much like a marathon runners would) but can’t metabolise it into energy very well with all the adrenalin.

The treatment for my metabolic condition is natural multi-metals (in capsule form and put together in a ratio suited only to my needs according to last blood tests, by a compounding chemist) at doses that would be toxic to others, to neutralize the disrupted chemical reactions in my body.

Adrenalin is the chemical which helps us “survive” in dangerous (but short-lasting) situations. Cortisol is what helps us keep all our organs just purring along smoothly in everyday life and stops our organs working too hard and wearing out too quickly. I didn’t have any cortisol left which was why my bones all started fracturing easily and I couldn’t think very clear. There was no cortisol left to take the edge off the adrenalin.

While my condition is treated pretty well at the moment, my body still responds like it is in fight/flight mode and chews up energy like I am running a marathon everyday. This means I can and do eat high calorie foods. But it also means I am more vulnerable to stress and will have even higher energy needs at times of high stress.
